In the vast majority of situations, parents and school staff work together as an effective team on behalf of the child with special needs. At times, parents may feel overwhelmed by the IEP process and find they need support, be it moral support, technical support, some information, a little coaching, an expert to use as a sounding board, or just to have another set of eyes and ears to help find solutions or come up with ideas. Those are times when a Special Education Advocate can be helpful to the IEP team, and in particular, to parents and their students.

MLG Advocacy and Consulting is owned by Maria Lang-Gavidia, M.S., a Special Education professional with over 20 years of experience in public education. Ms. Gavidia feels passionately that every student is entitled access to education in the least restrictive environment in which they can make progress towards their learning goals. Access to typical peers, being included and embraced as a member of the school community, and utilizing effective services and supports to “level the playing field” are key conditions to every child’s growth and success in school and in life.

About Maria Lang-Gavidia
Ms. Gavidia began her career in special education as a school psychologist. After 10 years, she became an elementary school principal for the next several years, then moved into the role of Special Education Director, where she remained for 9 more years. During the course of her career, Ms Gavidia has worked on behalf of students with special needs ranging in ages from preschool through high school. She has experience with each of the 13 eligibility categories designated in the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) as qualifying conditions for special education services, and has extensive experience with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder, students who have Emotional Disturbance/mental health needs, students with Specific Learning Disabilities, and related learning problems, such as attention and processing difficulties.
